1 FRESHMAN FOCUS PRESENTATION: GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS - CLASS OF-

2 TODAY’S OBJECTIVES  YOU WILL KNOW: –Graduation requirements  YOU WILL HAVE: An overview of a post high school plan and the process involved in achieving that plan

3 SELECTING CLASSES - PLACEMENT CRITERIA  Placement criteria: –Tests : STAR Testing –Teacher recommendations –First semester grades –Second semester grades –Summer school

4 HONORS/AP – WHAT TO DO?  You should be reading at the 90+ percentile  Make sure you can handle the honors/AP coursework –Make sure you can handle the number of those courses you select  “Schedule for success” – know yourself, know your limits

5 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  English - 40 credits  Math - 30 credits  Science - 20 credits  P.E. - 20 credits  Social Science- 40 credits  Fine Arts/For Lang - 10 credits  Electives - 70 credits  Total = 230

6 ADDITIONAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:  CAHSEE – MUST pass to earn diploma!  Students must at least pass Algebra1 and Geometry

7 CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM a.k.a. CAHSEE You MUST pass this test to receive a high school diploma. If not, you will receive a certificate of completion.

8 CAHSEE  A. What does the test cover? - English-Language Arts and an essay - Math (up to Geometry) B. When will you take this test? - Beginning in the Spring of 10 th grade

9 TYPICAL SOPHOMORE SCHEDULE  English – English 2 A/B or AH/BH  Social Studies – World History  Science (Life, Physical, “Other” required)  P.E./ Weight training/ Sport/ Dance  Foreign Language or Elective

10 THINGS TO THINK ABOUT TO GET AHEAD AND STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME  Begin thinking now about post high school plans  Begin researching (internet etc.)  Visit colleges/universities  Attend sessions in the College/Career Center  No college? Explore/Research options

11 COLLEGE TESTING A. PSAT - Grades 10 and 11 B. SAT and ACT - Spring of Grade 11 - Fall of Grade 12 (if needed) C. Subject Tests (SAT II’s) - In June, at end of Honors or AP class
