The Cell Cycle
3
Interphase G1 – 1 st growth phase S – synthesis (copying) of DNA G2 – 2 nd growth phase The cell grows and copies its DNA in preparation for dividing.
4
Prophase The DNA condenses into chromosomes. The centrioles start to build the spindle.
5
Metaphase The spindle fibers line the chromosomes up in the middle of the cell on the metaphase plate.
6
Anaphase The centrioles start to reel in the spindle, pulling the chromosomes apart and sending half of them to each side of the cell.
7
Telophase Chromosomes begin to uncoil and return to chromatin. Membrane begins to form around the new nucleus. Cytokinesis Cell pinches in two, dividing the cytoplasm and organelles in it evenly between the 2 new cells.
