1 THE SUN EARTH MOON SYSTEM

2 THURSDAY, SEPT. 3 RD SUN, EARTH AND MOON SYSTEM Big idea: Show the Earth’s position in the solar system, the solar system’s position in the Milky Way, and the Milky Way among other galaxies. Today’s objective: I can discuss the strengths and limitations of the models the class created to represent objects in the universe. Plan for the day: Set up science notebooks Review classroom procedures Present and discuss group models Universe: all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos. The universe is believed to be at least 10 billion light years in diameter and contains a vast number of galaxies; it has been expanding since its creation in the Big Bang about 13 billion years ago. Entry task: Get out your science notebook and number the pages (both sides of the page) on the bottom right corner.

3 VOCABULARY FORMAT DefinitionCharacteristics all of space and everything in it including stars, planets, galaxies, etc. Examples/sketchesNon-examples Universe

4 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Group presentations: What features does your model represent? What things does your model misrepresent? What things does your model omit (leave out)? What questions came up as your group worked on your model? Journaling prompt: Were there any patterns that emerged as the groups presented their models? Why is representing the universe a difficult challenge?
