1 6 TH GRADE LANGUAGE EXAM REVIEW 2012-2013

2 PARTS OF SPEECH

3 NOUN  PERSON  PLACE  THING  Examples: girl, boy, car, school, teacher, college, dog, parade

4 COMMON NOUN VS PROPER NOUN  Common Noun- “plain old noun”  Example: girl  Proper Noun- a SPECIFIC noun  Example: Mary

5 PRONOUN  Takes the place of a NOUN  Remember ProNOUN takes the place of a NOUN!  Examples:  He, she, it, they, them, her, him…  Mary put her necklace in the box.

6 VERB  Expresses an action  Ask “what are they doing?” or “what did they do?”  Example: The boy ran down the football field.

7 ADVERB  Modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or another verb.  Think adVERB modifies a VERB  Look for words that end in –ly!!  Questions: When, where, how, why, under what conditions…  Example:  The girl quickly disappeared.

8 PREPOSITION  A word placed before a noun or pronoun to make a phrase that modifies another word in the sentence  Example:  The girl read her book by the tree.

9 CONJUNCTION  A word that joins words, phrases, or clauses  Examples:  And, but, or, while, because

10 INTERJECTION  A word used to express emotion  Examples:  Oh!  Wow!  Oops!

11 TYPES OF SENTENCES

12 DECLARATIVE SENTENCE  A sentence that informs you.  A declarative sentence ends with a period.  Example:  I like to eat chicken nuggets for lunch.

13 IMPERATIVE SENTENCE  A sentence that gives a demand.  An imperative sentence can end with a period OR an exclamation mark.  Example:  Go to your room!  Turn in your homework.

14 EXCLAMATORY SENTENCE  A sentence that expresses excitement.  Ends with an exclamation mark.  Example:  The house is on fire!

15 INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE  Asks a questions.  Ends with a question mark.  Example:  What do you want for dinner tonight?
