Reflect 1a. No, you can simplify the right side of the equation by subtracting 18 – 7 = 11
Reflect 2a. Yes, you could divide both sides by 2 and get x – 6 = -9 which has the same solution, x = -3. It makes sense to do this whenever the number being distributed divides evenly into all other terms. It does not make sense if the number being distributed does not divide evenly inot all the other terms as this will lead to fractions appearingin the equation.

Literal equations are equations involving two or more variables. They are solved using inverse operations and properties of equality just as other algebraic equations are solved.
