Chapter 2 2.1: Solving One Step Equations
2
Properties/Definitions Addition Property of Equality: For every real number, a, b & c, if a=b, then a + c = b + c Subtraction Property of Equality: For every real number, a, b & c, if a=b, then a – c = b – c To solve an equation, we find the value(s) of the variable to make the equation true. This value(s) is called a solution of the equation. We solve equations by using inverse operations, or operations that undo one another.
3
Examples Solve the following equations x – 3 = 8 m – 10 = 2 y – 7.6 = 4
4
Examples cont. -18 = 6 + w 2/3 + y = 1/4 15a + 4.2
5
Examples cont. If a mom who weighs 129 lbs stands on scale with her baby and the scale says 147, how much does the baby weigh?
6
Properties Multiplication Property of Equality: For every real number, a, b & c, if a=b, then a∙c = b∙c Division Property of Equality: For every real number, a, b & c, if a = b, then a/c = b/c
