Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 1 Liquid Phase Purification Satoshi Mihara

Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 2 Liquid Phase Purification From our experience obtained in LP studies, we know that water contamination affects most the absorption of scintillation light. –Water can be removed by using molecular sieves. Improve circulation speed –Gas phase purification 5-6cc/minute (in liquid) Reduce heat load during purification –Gas phase purification needs liquefaction of purified gas

Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 3 Liquid phase purification test Pump and purifier in the Large Prototype chamber –Very simple –No worry about heat load

Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 4 Implementation in the final detector Xenon from the bottom bypass the wall to the pump/purifier Easy maintenance Possible heat load to the bottom  Next slide

Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 5 Realization of the system Verification of liquid phase purification –Large Prototype is the best to show the purification performance Long term operation in the final detector –Heat load to the bottom must be minimized

Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 6 Purification system in the final detector Gas phase purification Liquid Phase purification

Satoshi Mihara ICEPP, Univ. of Tokyo Feb. 2004 MEG Review Meeting 7 Status Fluid pump was delivered to a Japanese manufacturer. The pump and purifier cartridge are being assembled for verification test. Verification test will be performed by using the LP. motor Outside of the cryostat (room temp.) Inside of the cryostat (low temp.) Impeller Pump isolator
