MISC. CLASSES OF CHEMICALS Compressed Gases Cryogens
2
1.COMPRESSED GASES a. Properties Material or mixture having a pressure exceeding 40 psi at 70 0 F. Variety of examples Proper labeling / inspection of tanks
3
b. Most Common Hazards High pressure – commonly 2000 psi or 136 atm. Minor leaks create hazard Major rupture creates hazard
4
c. Proper Storage of Tanks Properly secured Properly segregated Mark empty tanks No storage in extreme temp. areas
5
d. Proper Use of Tanks Proper procedure for moving tanks Upright position Hand-cart and chains Always screw cap on tank Proper regulator / check for leaks **Proper use of regulator – see diagram
7
2. CRYOGENS a. Definition - liquified gases having a boiling point colder than –73 0 C. Liquid Nitrogen -196 0 C (-320 0 F) Liquid Helium - 269 0 C (-452 0 F) b. Proper Handling Protective wear Dewar Flasks (containers)
8
c. Common Hazards High Expansion Rate of Vaporization Ability to liquify other gases Tissue Damage
