Data Data Tables and Graphs

What is data? information gained from observing and testing an experiment. Scientists use data to gain understanding and make conclusions. Scientists often use graphs or tables to show their data and research findings Examples Purple hair Two ducks The blue M&M dissolved

What is jargon? special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand. Examples: I need a script in order to pick up the medicine. (medical jargon for "prescription") 2. I need a nurse to room 12 stat. (medical jargon for "in a hurry”) 3. Grab the sheet off the shelf. ( education jargon for worksheet)

What is the difference between data and jargon? Data is understood by many. Jargon is only understood by the group it was created for.

Data tables Used to show data or jargon in an organized format. A data table is a chart that organizes information into columns and rows. All tables should have a title; if you have measurements be sure to include the units of measurement.

Graphs Graphing data is a way of showing how the two variables are related, or the relationship between the manipulated and responding variables. The X-axis of a graph is generally the manipulated variable; the Y-axis of a graph is generally the responding variable.
