8 MAJOR SCALE PATTERNS  There are two half steps in any major scale.  They are located between scale degrees 3 and 4, and 7 and 8.

9 MARKING HALF STEPS  Half-steps are marked with a wedge like this: ^  For example 3^4 indicates a half step between notes 3 and 4.  F#^G is another example.

10 IDENTIFY HALF STEPS AND SCALE DEGREES  Each scale has eight scale degrees.  The first note of the scale is scale degree i.  Scale degree 1 and 8 are the same letter name.
