LOW AND NO COST WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY!!! ROGER PERRY Facilities Manager Phillip Merrill Environmental Center Annapolis, MD
4
How can you save for no cost? Two ways 1.Adjust the settings 1.Printer Sleep modes 2.Water Temperature 3.Vestibule / Hallway temp settings
5
How can you save energy for no cost? 2.TURN IT OFF!!
6
How much can turning it off save? LETS DO THE MATH! Hours in a year?Hours in a year? –24*365.25 = 8766hrs./yr. Work hours in a year?Work hours in a year? –8*365.25-(104*8) = 2090hrs./yr.
7
How much can turning it off save? LETS DO THE MATH! Desks are not occupied 76% of the time. And that’s not counting lunch, vacations or sick days!!!
8
How much can turning it off save? Leaving equipment on 24/7 uses 4 times the energy of turning it on only when working.
9
DIFFERENT STRATIGIES FOR TURNING IT OFF!! Employee ParticipationEmployee Participation –Get them to turn off everything at their desk when they leave including computers. –Reinforce energy saving habits Post signs reminding to turn off lights when leaving a roomPost signs reminding to turn off lights when leaving a room
10
DIFFERENT STRATIGIES FOR TURNING IT OFF!! The problem with employee participation is… You can’t count on them to do it all of the time.
11
DIFFERENT STRATIGIES FOR TURNING IT OFF!! Occupancy SensorsOccupancy Sensors –Manual & Automatic TimersTimers Computer Programs.Computer Programs.
12
Occupancy sensors.. Manual or Automatic? Low Cost Energy Saving Techniques.
13
Automatic Occupancy Sensors! AdvantagesAdvantages –Automatic on –Automatic off –Can be set not to come on if ambient light is above setting –Good if convenient switch placement is a problem
14
Automatic Occupancy Sensors! DisadvantagesDisadvantages –Can be tricky to set properly Too sensitive-false onsToo sensitive-false ons Not sensitive enough-false offsNot sensitive enough-false offs Don’t need auto-on in most casesDon’t need auto-on in most cases
15
Manual On Occupancy Sensors AdvantagesAdvantages –Easy to set sensitivity-on high –Because sensitivity is set to high, time delay can be very short –Will already be off if light levels are high enough –Automatic off
16
Manual On Occupancy Sensors DisadvantagesDisadvantages –Not appropriate where switch placement would be a problem –Have to turn on Not really a problem as who forgets to turn something they need onNot really a problem as who forgets to turn something they need on
17
Timers Work well for…Work well for… –Places where occ sensors won’t work –Allows set turn off times with simple, temporary override by tenants for special occasions
19
Don’t Make Energy Saving Inconvenient! Have coffee maker on a timer so it’s ready to go in the morningHave coffee maker on a timer so it’s ready to go in the morning Make sure staff understands how timers and sensors are set upMake sure staff understands how timers and sensors are set up Have a parking area with occupancy sensors for staff arriving in the darkHave a parking area with occupancy sensors for staff arriving in the dark –May have to change bulbs in that area for instant on

Plug Loads A Moving Target Use a “Venda-miser” on vending machinesUse a “Venda-miser” on vending machines –Our coke machine had a measured draw of 106.5kwh a week which would cost $498.42 a year to run –A Venda-miser cut that to 57.8kwh a week cutting yearly costs to $270.50.
