Scheduling Overview When scheduling their PSEO and MHS classes, students will need to be sure that they have at least 5 high school credits but no more than 8 high school credits for the year (upcoming slide will discuss how to calculate high school and college credits). Students may schedule for academic core classes and/or non-core classes through PSEO as long as they have a B average.
5
11 th Grade Example: 1 st semester schedule: US Government at H.S.= 1 credit Spanish 3 at H.S. = 1 credit American Lit @ PSEO =.8 2 nd semester schedule: Advanced Alg at H.S. = 1 credit Forensic Sci at H.S. = 1 credit English Comp 1 @ PSEO=.6 Total credits: 2.8 credits Add both semesters = Total credits: 2.6 credits Total credits: 5.4 credits for the school year
6
COMPASS Test A placement test for Math and English Must receive a minimum score of 1110 in English and 1500 in Math Need a minimum of Advanced Algebra to score appropriately in Math 3 attempts per semester are allowed (If students don’t meet requirements, they must wait until the following semester to take it again.) New procedures to test require specific days/times to test- contact college for info.
7
Options Available Option-B –Receive high school and college credit –School district pays for fees, books, and tuition Option-A –Receive college credit ONLY –All fees are paid for by the student
8
Finance While Option-B is paid for by the district, there are some financial considerations to take into account: –All transportation costs are paid for by the student. This could include: –Personal vehicle –Parent ride –Parental permission to ride with another student –Laketran (discount provided for Lakeland students) –Any student who fails to complete a college course, whether through a formal “class drop” process, an earned “F”, or non-attendance, are responsible for reimbursement of the tuition to the Madison Local School District. –Any tutoring or special fees associated with classes are the responsibility of the student and family Example: Private Tutoring
9
Academic Credits College credits are NOT the same as high school credits. 1 college credit= 0.2 high school credits –Example: Intro to Psychology, 3 college credits. This course is 0.6 high school credits (3 x 0.2 = 0.6). This means it takes 2 college classes to meet one high school graduation requirement. –Example: At Lakeland, a student must take American Literature (4 credits) and Composition 1 (3 credits) to equal English 11 here at Madison.
10
English 11 Example Course NameCollege CreditsHigh School Credit American Literature 4 credits (x.2)=.8 credits Composition 13 credits (x.2)=.6 credits TOTALS7 credits (x.2)=1.4 credits *satisfies Eng 11
11
Schedule Options PSEO students can: –Take all of their coursework at the college Students must have a “B” average in all their classes REMEMBER: In order to satisfy 1 high school credit, you need to take 2 college courses. For example: –English 11 at MHS = American Literature + Composition 1 –Take part of their coursework at MHS and part of it at the college (blended schedule)
12
Things to Consider All Option-B classes are on a 4.0 scale. Students are unable to get weighted grades in college level classes. This may impact your ranking and GPA, because you won’t be at the high school taking weighted classes. Some courses required for high school graduation may not be available at the PSEO location. Therefore, you may have to forfeit your participation in the program in order to meet our graduation requirements. –Example: American Literature Students are required to attend their PSEO classes even if Madison is closed that day and vice versa.
13
Things to Consider Cont. Many colleges are encouraging students to stay at the high school and take rigorous courses which include the honors and the AP courses in order to be well prepared for college. –Do you have a GPA of 4.0 or higher? –Is you class rank pretty high? –Are you going into a career that includes medical, science, or math? –After high school, are you planning on attending a small private school with a specific/competitive program? If you answered YES to any of these questions, we recommend that you reconsider participating in the PSEO program due to the fact that
14
Transfer Assurance Guides (TAG) TAG is a resource to help parents and students identify equivalent, or equal, approved courses at Ohio public institutions of higher education. TAG will help you choose courses that will transfer to and/or possibly go towards your program of study at another Ohio public college or university. http://regents.ohio.gov/transfer/tags/index.php
15
Scheduling Process SPRING (NOW ) Attend PSEO meeting and turn in signed Counseling form Apply to the college of your choice and turn application in to Mrs. Watts to request MHS transcripts Take COMPASS (if applicable) Complete MHS scheduling as if you will be here full-time in case you do not participate in PSEO next school year Admitted students will receive word from the college Upon admittance, meet with an advisor at the college to create a schedule for your college classes Schedule an appointment with your high school counselor to get the appropriate PSEO scheduling paperwork signed Early- AUGUST Finalize high school schedule with your MHS counselor to make sure it coincides with your college schedule ******PLEASE GIVE A COPY OF YOUR FINAL COLLEGE SCHEDULE TO YOUR COUNSELOR AT THIS APPOINTMENT!!**********

Scheduling Timeline At most PSEO schools, students have 1 week to drop a class at the college. If you drop the class AFTER the one week timeline you will be charged for the class and must pay the tuition. NO EXCEPTIONS!! All class drops and adds must be approved by the high school counselor, to ensure that you are carrying the appropriate number of credits, and are on track for graduation!
17
Instructions for Continuing PSEO Students Lakeland: Continuing student form from MHS Counselor Lake Erie: Meet with LEC advisor KSU-Ashtabula: Enrollment paperwork sent directly to student in the mail
18
Grade Point Average Reminders All classes taken at the college will be posted on high school transcripts and the GPA averaged into the student’s MHS cumulative GPA Poor PSEO grades WILL impact your high school GPA Students cannot earn weighted grades in their PSEO classes
19
Graduation Requirements Students must meet the high school graduation requirements and be on track for graduation to attend Option-B. High school graduation takes priority over Option-B. If for any reason you are not eligible to graduate you will not be allowed to attend Option-B classes.
20
Academic Responsibilities Students who attend Option-B are still Madison students and are encouraged to participate in any of our extracurricular activities. Please make sure that if you are in athletics you are careful to: –Make your Option-B schedule to fit your athletic schedule –Make sure you are enrolled in enough credits to be eligible –Make sure you are passing enough credits to be eligible –Eligibility = 2.5 High school credits per quarter –Make sure you tell your high school and college counselor you are in athletics and need to be eligible
21
Athletic Eligibility Anatomy @ MHS = 1 credit Phys Ed @ MHS =.25 credits Band @ MHS =.5 credits Eng. Comp @ PSEO =.6 credits Government @ PSEO =.6 credits College Alg. @ PSEO =.8 credit British Lit @ PSEO =.6 credits Biology @ PSEO =.6 credits = 2.45 credits NOT Eligible to Play = 2.5 credits Eligible to Play
22
Student’s Social Responsibility If you attend Option-B, the students and teachers at the college will not know that you are a high school student. If there are any problems, FERPA prevents the colleges from informing the parents or the high school. This increases the responsibility of the student to adhere to all family and age-related rules.
23
What to Turn In Today PSEO Counseling Requirement forms need to be turned, back and front signed by parent and student. Form is due to the Counselors by March 30th per Ohio state law.
