1 Welcome Back Session VIII Tools for Encourage Processing and Discourse January 11, 2012

2 Talk Moves –(1) Revoicing: “So let me see if I’ve got your thinking right. You’re saying XXX?” (with time for students to accept or reject the teacher’s formulation) –(2) Asking students to restate someone else’s reasoning: “Can you repeat what he just said in your own words?” –(3) Asking students to apply their own reasoning to someone else’s reasoning: “Do you agree or disagree and why?” –(4) Prompting students for further participation: “Would someone like to add on?” –(5) Asking students to explicate their reasoning: “Why do you think that?” or “How did you arrive at that answer?” or “Say more about that” –(6) Challenge or Counter Example: “Is this always true?” or “Can you think of any examples that would not work?” –(7) Wait-time I and Wait-time II

3 For our next session: Refer to planning consideration and find an opportunity to employ the 6 (7) “Talk Moves” For your “turn in” to our next session –A brief synopsis of the lesson (objectives and a brief description/1 paragraph) –List of “Talk Moves” employed –Reflection on how successful those “moves” were in terms of increasing accountability and rigor –Anecdotes/Evidence of… student accountability of “knowledge” student accountability of “rigor”

5 What can a LiveScribe pen do?

6 Getting Started Grab a Box (includes pen and note-taking book) Sign out Pen, Note-taking book, and Notebook Setting Date Setting Time

7 PEN ON (records what is written) PEN ON RECORD (records what is written and said)

8 Turn Pen ON Write the following problem: –There were 4 school buses with 24 children on each bus. How many children were riding busses? PEN ON “Tap” Record, Draw a little DOT and Answer, be sure to talk yourself through the problem. When done, hit STOP To playback, touch pen to DOT

10 Time for a Little “Fun” Find the four pointed arrow on the bottom left of your LiveScribe Notebook Tap center where all lines intersect Tap the “down” arrow until you hear and see “piano” Then tap “right” arrow and follow directions

11 Break During your break, please get a laptop from the COW cart and login as you would do to your computer at school.

12 Using LiveScribe Software Double Click the “Livescribe” desktop icon on your computer. Using the cable provided in your kit, connect to USB port and then connect other end to pen. Having your pen connected serves two purposes: charging pen and allowing you to upload what is on the pen. It will ask you if you want to register your pen at this time, DO NOT. You will want to register your pen to your classroom computer. Nick will need to make sure you have the software loaded on your laptop/desktop Connect your pen to your laptop

13 Once connected….. Three files should have uploaded to your “Library”

14 Oh the possibilities…… Great tool……. –To encourage students to write –Hear themselves process –Validate/invalidate/correct thinking –ELL –Thinking aloud/Modeling –Guiding –MOTIVATION/ENGAGEMENT How else do you see the Livescribe pen being used? In your Livescribe notebook, in the very center, draw a circle and write “Oh the possibilities….” in the circle. Then work with a team of 2-3 and record your thoughts, both in writing and verbally. Share out/connect

16 Registering your Livescribe pen online Once software has been loaded on your classroom computer. Plug in your pen, it will then ask you if you want to register pen, yes, “Register Now” Follow Prompts Once you have registered your Livescribe pen, you can join and upload to Livescribe Community/Online

18 Resources and Next Steps Stickers Post-It Notes How do you plan on using? Ideas? Come to our next session with a brief written synopsis (in your Livescribe notebook) of how you employed the pen. (PEN ON) At the end of your synopsis, write the following bulleted list –Successes –Challenges –Next Time Once written, hit “record” and record your thoughts on the three bulleted items verbally.
