Leaf structure
2
What functions do the cells in a leaf need to perform? Leaf is a plant organ. Cells are specialized so that form matches function. List as many functions as you can think of for cells found in a plant leaf.
3
Task One View a cross section of a leaf. Draw in detail and with complete accuracy. Label any recognizable cell structures. Make a table listing at least three different cell types and what you think their function is. In color and with total magnification.
4
Task Two Remove a single leaf from a bean plant. Paint a narrow strip of nail polish on the top and the bottom of the leaf. Let dry. Place a strip of scotch tape over the nail polish, press down, and then gently remove. Place tape directly on a microscope slide and draw what you see. What is that mysterious structure that looks like lips? Compare the upper leaf surface with the lower leaf surface.
5
Analysis Questions What is the chemical formula for photosynthesis? Make a final list of what you think specialized cells within a leaf must do.
