Clear evidence that longer Birth Intervals Reduce Infant and Neonatal Mortality Infant/child Mortality can be reduced by as much as 50% 1990-91 and 2006-07 PDHS

Higher Neonatal and Post-Neonatal Mortality for Teenaged Mothers 1990-91 and 2006-07 PDHS Infant/Child mortality can be reduced by nearly 40% by delaying age at child birth

Maternal Mortality Ratio by Age Source: Pakistan Demographic and Health Surveys, 1990-91 and 2006-07 Maternal Mortality can drop dramatically by reducing number of pregnancies after 35

What Has been Accomplished so far

Progress to date HTSP guidelines and targets established as program objectives under the draft national population policy of GoP-2010 The National Standards for Family Planning Services Manual Revised by the MOPW to include HTSP guidelines A compendium of Quranic verses, Hadith and Fatawa developed to promote accurate knowledge about Islam regarding birth spacing among Religious Leaders

Progress to date HTSP included in the training curriculum by FALAH for public and private sector health providers HTSP included in the teaching curriculum of medical colleges and nursing and midwifery schools

Progress to date HTSP approach and guidelines adopted Communications themes and messages developed and finalized in consensus with partners – MOH, MOPW, PAIMAN, UNICEF, UNFPA and after extensive pre testing Partners agreed to coordinate their messages IEC materials produced on HTSP for community mobilization Mass media TV and Radio commercials developed and being aired

Key communication objectives In addition to HTSP - Promote Male Responsibility and Inter spousal communication Involve RL and other Influencers Educate providers on effective management of side effects Encourage providers to be proactive advocates of birth spacing

Expanding Contraceptive Choice in Pakistan Seminar conducted by GWU to introduce and promote Standard Days Method (SDM) and Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) with the partners SDM, LAM and Emergency Contraceptives included in the Trainers and Participants manuals on CCA and CCFPS by FALAH Over 7,000 health providers trained on SDM and LAM in FALAH districts A pilot study on ECP underway to assess acceptance and compliance through LHWs in four FALAH districts in collaboration with UNFPA A pilot study underway on SDM using cycle beads in five FALAH Union Councils
