SERENATE NREN WORKSHOP Answers to the SERENATE USER questionnaire (1) « Non research » users : –Do and need to access to large database for consultation and down load of files –Do Use the National Research Network (also for content) –Want to use networking for : distance collaboration, access to data bases and forum, file download, distributed computing, virtual communities, client-server services, distance learning, videoconferencing –Are involved in collaborative projects : both within Europe and outside Europe –Are concerned by Privacy, confidentiality, Authentification, security issues

SERENATE NREN WORKSHOP Limitation due to network facilities –Slow network hardware, low bandwidth, unstability of the network, bandwidth costs, « human resistance », limitations in regulation, software incompatibilities, intellectual property, campus network Networks to improve in terms of : –speed, bandwidth, hardware, internet portals, database, videoconferencing, applications, storage, security Use limited by what type of connections? –Around 45% users do not see any limitation, –For the others : 50% by local networks, 24% by international, 13% by National, 13% by Regional Answers to the SERENATE USER questionnaire (2)

SERENATE NREN WORKSHOP What are their needs? The current needs + the future trends are necessary to understand in order to serve at best the user. Indeed they have consequences in terms of : –Service provided by NRENs : a network +value added services (security, data storage, help desk …) –Infrastructure of the network (who do we reach?) and levels of quality of service –and of course : funding

SERENATE NREN WORKSHOP SERENATE Case studies Each case study should be written in English, an in about 10 pages. Content : 1- FACTS - who (define the user adressed in this study) is connected, how many, how is it connected? - How is the NREN involved? - What do they use the network for? - What services do they need (AAA, helpesk, etc...) 2- ISSUES - Organisation and finances - Compatibility with Acceptable Use Policy - Issues regarding competition with commercial ISP - Impact on NRENs (traffic, services, etc..) 3- CONCLUSION - experience : success or failure ? - why : success and risk factors 4- REFERENCES and POINTERS

DANEMARK : - Topic : Network for schools - writer available : can contract with UNI-C the NETHERLANDS : - Topic : Student access to the Internet by Fiber to the Dormitory - a report is available but not worth using as it is. GERMANY : - Topic : Connecting hospitals to DFN FRANCE : - Topic : the Content loop (culture and teaching content on the core of the network) PORTUGAL : - Topic : connecting schools on the NREN Other ideas : SWEDEN : connecting museums? UK : connecting further education?
