A teaser trailer is a shortened version of a movie trailer that normally lasts between one minute and one minute and a half and will leave the audience wanting more. A teaser trailer can be released up to a year before the actual movie is released. These trailers usually include rough version of a movie and sometimes do not include scenes from the movie. Sometimes a tagline, the movie website the producers and distributors are included during the duration of the trailer. It is through the idea of a teaser trailer that creates hype and excitement surrounding the unreleased movie and will encourage individuals to go see the movie. This is the movie poster for the horror film “Prom Night”. It has the tagline, “A Night To Die For”, giving us an incline into what the movie is about

The main characters. The release date. The movie website. The genre will be identified. Soundtrack/ Dialogue. A colour scheme that will also connote the genre. It is these factors that I will have to take into consideration when creating my own teaser trailer.

The Hangover is a comedy movie that was released in 2009. It was through the comic scenes in this trailer that I decided to analyse it. The trailer features the idea that a group of males go to Vegas just before a wedding and loose their friend. The trailer opens up with the distributors logo- Warner Brothers and this will interest those who are fans of this company. This trailer also has a retrospective viewpoint on the events that happened earlier. These misfortunes are portrayed in a hilarious sequence of events and the upbeat music complete with a guitar, bass and vocals complement what the viewers witness onscreen. This trailer also leaves the viewers wondering if they do find their friend on time and get home to proceed with the wedding. This technique will encourage individuals to go see the movie and answer the question themselves.

This trailer features the young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who travels to a remote village to organise a dead clients papers when he discovers the ghost of a woman set on vengeance. Similar to “The Hangover” teaser trailer, “The Woman in Black” also opens with the distributor’s logo, indicating to the viewers which companies where involved with this movie and will encourage fans of these companies to go see the movie. Many shots are utilized throughout the duration of this teaser trailer such as an establishing shot, to set the eerie atmosphere for this horror, a close up of the ghost, so that the viewers will be able to identify her spirit throughout the movie. Providing a close up of the ghost will also provide a moment of horror during the movie. Some shots throughout the trailer just provided with text which connotes to the viewers what may happen throughout the movie and also sets a terrifying tone for the trailer. The music that is heard also compliments the eerie tone as by the beginning of the trailer a low, menacing non- diegetic sound can be heard. This sound gets louder by the climax of the trailer when the viewers get a short shot of the ghost, indicating that this will be a crucial point in the trailer. By the conclusion of the trailer, a child’s toy can be heard again creating a spine-chilling atmosphere.

Inception is a movie that features Dom Coob, who is a trained thief, is the greatest in the art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. It is this weird, yet excellent plot which has won this movie 4 Oscars and also received wide critical acclaim. Similar to “The Hangover” and “The Woman in Black” teaser trailers, this trailer opens with the distributors logo, Warner Brothers, which will encourage fans of this company to go see the movie. Various shots were utilized throughout the duration of this teaser trailer such as, a birds-eye view establishing shot of a city which connotes that the action will take place in this city while individuals carry on with their ordinary lives. Again, like the previous trailers, a close up of the main character is illustrated to portray him as the leading figure in this film. A deep bass sound is heard at the beginning of the teaser trailer creating an ominous feeling to the trailer. By the middle of the trailer, high violins have been added to the music playing a fast tempo, reflecting the faster pace of shots on screen.

The genre that my teaser trailer will be based on is the action/thriller genres. In the following slides I will identify the various codes and conventions that make up the horror/thrill genre.

A great thriller teaser trailer that I discovered was for a movie called “Taken” By analysing this trailer I discovered that a thriller genre as a clear set of events that take place in a chronological order. We are firstly introduced to the major characters by separate shots. This allows the characters to endear themselves to the viewers or sometimes allow the viewers to direct their sympathies away from the characters. The next sequence of events in a thriller trailer illustrates the main characters enjoying themselves. Seeing these characters happy and joyful makes the unfortunate event that happens even more devastating as the viewers can witness the change in mood and emotions. The music in the trailer also helps to add to the emotion.

Throughout the duration of a thriller movie, a serious event or secret will unfold that will alter the events of the movie. This event will keep the viewer in suspense. To create this in the trailer mid- shots of the main characters illustrated their changed of emotion from the beginning of the movie until now. Close-ups also are used to maximum effect to focus on a certain element which may inject suspense into the movie, such as the mysterious figures footsteps in the image above.

From my research I have discovered the different codes and conventions that help to create a successful thrill movie trailer. Use of various camera shots- These include the standard mid-shot, long shot and close up. However in thriller trailers, low angled and high angled shots are used to maximum effect to create suspense or obscure the truth. Quick transitions- Thriller movies usually have a very fast paced trailer which helps to portray the suspense and action that is evident throughout it course. Quick transitions and the careful use of editing is vital in the success of a thriller trailer. Sharp editing- Editing is also a vital characteristic in a thriller teaser trailer. In the various thriller trailers I have analysed they all contain quick flashing images, illustrating subliminal messages and hidden scenes throughout the trailer. This adds a new dimension to the trailer as the provide the viewer with another insight into the movie. Emotive/ Fast Paced Music- After analysing the trailer for “Taken” I have a better understanding of the music that can be heard in a thriller teaser trailer. Emotive music can be used to portray the emotion in the unravelling events and will give a better understanding of how these events affect the different characters in the movie. Fast paced, cinematic music can also be used to create a suspenseful atmosphere and keep the audience on the edge of their seat.

I have decided to analysis the teaser trailer to the movie “Scream” which is a movie that falls under both the horror and thriller genre. From the outset, the atmosphere to the trailer was set using an ominous telephone call where the caller seemingly new about the receiver’s life. The different angles of the girls face above is a great technique used that indicated the horror creeping into her expression. Similar to the different movie teaser trailers from various genres, horror movies also introduce the viewers to the major characters. However all these characters have a worried, anxious, fearful expression on their face. This also connotes that this is a horror movie.

Many horror trailers also make use of shots with just text which gives an overview of the movie and also set the atmosphere with its choice of words, “One movie defined fear”. Numerous times these words are written in red font to connotes blood.

Villain- Horror movies usually have a villain that may be seen throughout the teaser trailer. However this villain is never identified or unmasked during the trailer. Action- An ordinary individual will usually try to defeat the villain and again the outcome of this is not included in the trailer. This will leave the viewer wanting to see the movie to witness the outcome. Camera Shots- Close-ups will be utilized to maximum effect as it is this camera shot that will mask an image and may veil the object and obscure it. Low-angled shots is also extremely important as they may illustrate an individual hiding from the villain. Establishing shots are also highly effective in a horror movie as it will set the tone from the outset e.g A haunted house Fast editing- From the trailers I have analysed, the horror films have quick editing as not to give too much of the action away and to also keep a mood of suspense and eeriness to the trailer. Darkness- Many horror films seem to be set in darkness or the villain will become associated with darkness. Colours- The colour scheme is very important in a horror trailer as the colours come to have symbolic meaning such as red which may connote blood and black which may connote death.

Music- Many horror films have a very distinctive soundtrack which may be used in their trailer such as Halloween and The Omen. These soundtrack keeps an eeriness about the trailer and also create a spine-chilling atmosphere. In many horror movies, the villains also have a motif of music that will play when they enter the scene. Sound- Various non-diegetic sounds may be heard in a horror teaser trailer such as screaming and weapons that portray a realistic atmosphere.

Use of camera shots Dramatic use of music Fast editing and transitions Distributors logo at the beginning of the trailer Non-diegetic sounds The title of the movie at the end along with the release date and the movie website.
