CHARTING A COURSE TO THE MOON TEAM NAME: “AFTF” “Allyn’s Full Throttle Fliers”

NAVIGATION PLAN: EARTH TO MOON

AFTF ENGINEER CREW’S UNMANNED 14 TH SOURCE Our rocket will launch by using two rocket boosters. The body portion of the rocket is the belly tank, which also carries the fuel. The rocket will contain a smaller rocket pod within it to be used to impact the moon to collect data. The rocket will split in half to release this smaller rocket. This smaller rocket will contain a ring that will collide with the moon and collect data. The spacecraft will orbit the moon vertically and horizontally. The parts that are separated from the smaller rocket pod will almost fully disintegrate in space. Our unmanned craft will contain an LRO that will take images of the moon during our orbit around the moon.

AFTF CARTOGRAPHER CREW ROUTE AND ORBITAL PATHS We will orbit Earth once to gain speed and velocity. Then a gravitational slingshot to create an arch toward the moon. We will change course along the arch to make a downwards slope towards the Moon. Once in the Moons orbit, we will go around the moon at least once. As we approach the North Pole, we will start going downwards and then impact the Moon using the second rocket.

AFTF NAVIGATOR CREW INSTRUMENTS, CONTROL, AND TRACKING Guiding-We will put a 1 meter circle satellite, that we can adust on the Engineer’s smaller rocket. We will also put a 1 ½ meter satellite on the rocket so we can see what is ahead of us and to know where we are going. Controlling-We will use the chapter 8 at Houston Space Center to control our spacecraft. There is also the IMU we will use to find the rockets speed and position. Tracking-We will use a Radiation Tolerant Single On-Board Computer at Houston Space Center to track and direct the 14 source. The computer uses radiation from nearby stars to track our spacecraft. We will also use a star chart to navigate to the moon with star navigation and two DSN satellites. Staying on Course-We will use the RTSOC to redirect the 14 source incase it goes off course. We will also use the Star Chart to know where we are at all times.
