Staff Development Day, Term 2, 2011 Andrew King

 Think of Facebook and MySpace and their ability to connect people using the internet. Why can’t we do the same in the classroom?  Edmodo and Wikispaces connect people however, they connect students, teachers, resources and quality learning activities (Web 2.0) in an online educational environment. Furthermore they assist in collaborative learning and even management.  Why use Edmodo? Why use Edmodo?

 Think of Edmodo as an online classroom and a Wikispace as a file storage facility. Wikispaces Individual or class membership Organisation of class/teacher/ faculty files Class organisation of students work eg: links to completed online activities, Scope and Seq, assessment schedules etc. 24/7 access to your notes and resources. Class collaboration. Entire site can be archived into.PDF files or data files for B/Up. Edmodo Individual membership Posting of class resources, including weblinks and Web2.0 Issuing of class activities, HW and assessment tasks with the ability to mark each students work and provide feedback. 24/7 access to your notes and resources. Student networking and Student/Teacher networking Class groups can be archived.

 Think of a student workbook as Edmodo or a Wikispace and a worksheet you have given your class as a Web 2.0 tool. Once completed it needs to be filed. But where? This depends on how it was issued and how the teacher wishes to have it submitted (filed).  Remember Web 2.0 tools are external to Edmodo and need to be linked to Edmodo via an assignment or note. Alternatively they can be provided to students on the whiteboard.  Note: Some Web 2.0 activities cannot be saved as a file such as.docx or.pptx etc and only the url (or web address of the completed activity) in the address bar can be supplied to the teacher.  Handy Hint: Many Web 2.0 tools require an account. Therefore it is recommended that students keep a record of usernames and passwords in a safe location. Alternatively, in some instances it may be worth using a generic class account setup by the teacher (some limitations will apply).

 If you need help after today, located on the H drive in the folder titled Edmodo you will find the following document which will take you through the sign up process.document
