1. Political Theatre Project Political systems/governing styles throughout the world and history have had an impact on how theatre in that respective society was allowed to develop.

2. Project requirements All students will research a specific country’s style of politics, the time period in which it was in place, and explore how that political system/government impacted the types of theatre created. Please note that some of the subjects for research may have more than one applicable political/government system. You are to focus on one specific style and research that political/governing form. You are to include an example of a script (a scene or monologue) that was written under that particular political system. You are to write a monologue/develop a performance that does not exceed 6 minutes that would have been acceptable under the political system you researched. Cite your sources. USE END NOTES!!!! 3. Research to include Type of government are you reporting on and its attributes. In addition, what kinds of theatre are popular/allowable under this political system?(Ex: Currently the US is a democracy. What is a democracy and how is it structured? How was this form of government established? What sort of laws are in place that allow for different theatre styles? How is the government/political practices reflected in theatre? What sort of restrictions are placed on theatrical performances? Are there parts of the society that are politically more tolerant of theatre and its variances? Is there styles of theatre that would be considered unacceptable?) Specific theatre theorists or theatre styles that developed under these political systems. 4. Research Presentation This is an individual project. All research is to be completed by the individual. Put all your notes in your DWB. You are to compile you research findings in a paper that is not to exceed 1500 words. (Source citations are not included in your word count.) 5. The performance Your performance should be memorized and rehearsed. There should be blocking (planned movement) that shows that this is a performance and not just the individual standing delivering memorized lines. It should show aspects of the society you are reporting on and how the influence of their politics shaped your piece.

6. The performance Any costuming must fit over regular clothes. NO EXCEPTIONS! Any props are to be supplied by the performer.
