Rural Intersection Decision Support (IDS) System Demo Highlights What you won’t see (Well, probably not this)
2
What you will see u Animation of LIVE data collected by all IDS system sensors (projected on a screen in a tent) u LIVE demo of Xroads vehicle trajectory tracking (projected on a screen in the tent) u Radar sensor / processor & communication suite (monitoring mainline traffic) u Laser / radar vehicle classification sensor suite (minor road traffic) u Surveillance cameras (IR and visible light, Xroads and mainline) u Controller Cabinet / Wireless communication
3
Other Highlights u Wireless broadcast / reception capability v Laptops/Tablet PC’s running animation software to illustrate capability of intersection communicating to vehicles within range of intersection v Probe vehicle broadcasting engine speed, vehicle speed, and throttle position v Animation running on tablet PC near roadside for “eyeball” calibration/verification
4
Plan View Mainline Radar Mainline Radar Xroads Tracking Cameras (Research) Research Radar Vehicle Classification Sensors Wireless 802.11b Broadcast antenna
5
Procedure u All meet in Tent v See live animation of sensor data v See live Xroads vehicle trajectory tracker v See prototype Driver Infrastructure Interface (DII) hardware v See data xmitted from probe vehicle to tent u Break into 4 groups v Get Safety Vest v See Camera v See Radar / Cabinet v See Vehicle Classifier v See Controller Cabinet
6
MN IDS Crossroads Sensor Layout Xroads Tracking Cameras (Station 4) Vehicle Classification Sensors (station 3) Control Cabinet (Station 2) Roadside Radar (Station 1) Tent
7
Intersection Crossroads – Vehicle Classification
8
What you won’t see u RWIS at the intersection v 0.9 miles northwest of intersection v Will be pointed out on the bus u GOOD live Infrared camera video v Quality issues in bright daylight conditions v Tracking easier with visible light cameras v Will likely have IR monitor at controller cabinet.
9
One Intersection Crash u Driver Fell asleep on CSAH 9 at 2:45 AM
10
Sleepy Driver results
11
Sleepy Driver Damage approximately $2500 to IDS System $1000 Electrical Repair $1000 U of MN Equipment $500 Mn/DOT Damage Does not include replacement of electrical utility pole
