South Pointe Mission To give all students an opportunity to develop an interest, be engaged, explore, and learn different aspects of science outside the classroom. Important dates for your student Student Informational Meeting- Thursday, August 27 from 2:30-3:30 pm in the PLTW room (D224) Applications due Sept. 11 Testing- Tues-Thurs., Sept. 29-Oct.1 from 2:30- 3:30 Doesn’t determine for sure who will compete There will be a Team A and B, Donation- $35 We will meet Thursdays and some Tuesdays from 2:20- 3:20

A. MORE THAN ARITHMETIC Students will learn Patterns of Number & Counting Patterns of Shapes Patterns of Reasoning

B. HIGHER THAN MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL In addition to the middle school level math (algebra 1 & geometry), Students will learn Sequences & Series:Algebra 2 Level Probability & Counting:Algebra 2 Level Basic Number Theory:College Level Basic Concepts of AMC 10

C. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO LEARN THIS STUFF? Our approach (Concept-Based Lectures contrary to Drill-Based Practices) will help tremendously our students to develop Analytic Thinking Skills Creative & Logical Approaches Skills Necessary for High School Mathematics Skills Required for Successful Academic Career

D. WHAT IS MATHCOUNTS CLUB? A club on the South Pointe Middle School campus that promotes and stimulates mathematics and prepares students for the mathcounts competition. Meets every Friday 2:30 – 3:30 Work on-line (website) to help with topics Take the AMC-8 test (see website)

D. WHAT IS MATHCOUNTS COMPETITION? MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. Regional Competition at C.P.Pomona in Feb. State Competition at U.C. Irvine in March National Competition in April ???
