Geology Project Choose one of these project ideas or create your own project plan and submit it to Mrs. Verrall for approval.
2
Guidelines O All projects may be done as a hard copy or digitally. O Hard copy versions may include paper, poster board, 3-D model, collages, paintings, etc. O Digital versions may include Power points, video, word processed docs or other presentation programs such as educreations or videolicious. O Students may work in partners or groups of 3-4, but the work must reflect the number of participants. So if there are 3 of you, there should be 3 times the amount of information. O All projects will be presented in class.
3
Project Topic Ideas O Rock cycle O Identifying rocks and minerals O Mineral tests O Layers of the earth O Plate tectonics O Volcanos O Earthquakes O Erosion – wind, water, ice O Other???
4
Geology Song Project O Create an original song or chant about one area of geology. O Brainstorm familiar nursery rhymes or patriotic songs that you can use as the rhythm. O Using your science notebook, text and one other resource, research your geology topic. O Turn your research into lyrics and teach your song or chant to the class. O EXAMPLE: a video of you singing a rock cycle stages song to the tune of “Yankee Doodle Dandy”
5
Make a 3-D Model O Make a model of a geology concept or idea. O Label the different parts of your model. O Prepare a 2-5 minute oral presentation to explain what your model shows.
6
Power Point Project O Think of an “unanswered question” you still have about geology. O Using your science notebook, text and one other resource, research the answer to your question. O Create a series of 5-10 slides to share what you learned with the class. O EXAMPLE: What are other uses for diamonds besides jewelry?
7
Educreations Project O Use educreations.com to create a presentation on Geology. O Use 5-7 slides, with an image and your explanation on each slide. O EXAMPLE: Explain the rock cycle and it’s effects on the environment. O EXAMPLE: Choose a specific mineral that you are interested in and demonstrate it’s uses by creating a lesson with Educreations.
8
Picture/Video Collage O Make a list of geology terms. O Draw pictures, cut from magazines, or use online photos to create a collage of these terms. O Narrate your collage with a script you can read to the class or record yourself describing each, term. O Videolicious is a super simple App you can download to ipad or iphone to create a 1 minute narrated slide show complete with background music.
9
popplet.com O Popplet allows you to make graphic organizers of information. O Choose a topic you are interested that can be presented in a graphic organizer. O Be sure you have at least 7-10 pieces of information. O EXAMPLE: Choose a specific mineral that you are interested in, research it’s properties or uses and create Popplet to present the information. O Be prepared to present and explain/define the parts in your oral presentation.
10
Popplet Project Example Properties of Minerals The following physical properties of minerals can be easily used to identify a mineral: 1. Color 2. Streak 3. Hardness 4. Cleavage or Fracture 5. Crystalline Structure 6. Transparency 7. Tenacity 8. Magnetism 9. Luster 10. Odor 11. Taste 12. Specific Gravity
