4 Evidence the knights were to blame Knights carried out the attack: Reginald Fitzurse, William de Traci, Richard Britto, Hugh de Morville They were heavily armed – ready to use violence They were aggressive, one yelled, ‘Where is TB, traitor to king and country?’ Tried to grab Becket outside

5 Evidence the king was to blame King’s personality – hot-tempered The knights were acting on his orders He issued the phrase, ‘Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?’ He performed an act of penance – went barefoot to Canterbury and was whipped by the monks – guilty conscience?

6 Becket brought it on himself He took his new job too seriously He provoked Henry – he refused to make church courts fairer He excommunicated anyone who’d helped Henry whilst he was away in France He ordered the monks to unbolt the Cathedral doors He said ‘I am ready to die’ and bowed his head in preparation – did he want to be a martyr? The Church benefited from his death – 1000s of pilgrims came to his shrine, Canterbury Cathedral became very rich and famous!
