Did you know that in the English language no words rhyme with month, orange, silver, or purple ? Warm-up There are 6 books on a reading list. Students must read 3 of the books on the list. In how many different ways can a student select 3 books?

10.1 +/- polynomials A polynomial is an expression that has one or more terms in the form of ax n. ax n coefficient variable Exponent (optional) Has to be a whole #
6
3 main types of polynomials Monomial – has 1 term –Examples:3x 2 or 2y or 8 Binomial – has 2 terms –Examples:3x + 4 or x 3 – 6 Trinomial – has 3 terms –Example:-3x 2 + 4x – 14 Remember – terms are separated by an addition on subtraction sign The degree of a polynomial is the highest exponent in the expression Name the terms of the polynomials
7
Standard form Polynomials are in STANDARD FORM when the terms are written so that the powers are in decreasing order from left to right. Mixed polynomial 3x + 4x 3 – 2x 2 + 5 Standard form 4x 3 – 2x 2 + 3x + 5 Write all polynomials in Standard form
8
Adding/subtracting polynomials Add/subtract polynomials by simply collecting their like-terms. Using a vertical format is the easiest way. When adding – –line up the like terms vertically. –Add straight down. When subtracting – –Remember subtracting is the same as adding the opposite –Change the problem to addition & distribute the subtraction sign –Line up the like terms vertically –Add straight down

10.2 multiplying polynomials To multiply a monomial by a binomial, trinomial, etc., distribute the monomial 3(x + 2) = 3x + 6 3x(2x 2 – 5x +3) 6x 3 – 15x 2 + 9x To multiply two binomials, you will use the FOIL method – –Stands for FIRST, OUTSIDE, INSIDE LAST
11
FOIL Method (3x – 2)(2x + 7) Multiply first 2 terms 3x(2x) 6x 2 Multiply the outside terms 3x(7) 21x Multiply the inside terms -2(2x) -4x Multiply the Last terms -2(7) -14 Put them all together & simplify 6x 2 + 21x + -4x + -14 6x 2 + 17x + -14
12
(2x – 5)(4x 2 – 3x -1) Multiply the first term by each of the terms in the second factor 2x(4x 2 – 3x -1) 8x 3 – 6x 2 – 2x Multiply the 2 nd term by each of the terms in the second factor -5 (4x 2 – 3x -1) -20x 2 + 15x + 5 Add the results together & put in standard form 8x 3 + -20x 2 +-6x 2 +15x +-2x + 5 8x 3 + - 26x 2 + 13x + 5
