Warm-up Answer the following questions 1.Did you have a good night? 2.What 2 numbers multiplied together = 30 AND if added, together = 11? 3.Fill in the blank 1.6x – 9 = 3(2x - ___) 2.15x 2 -20x + 35 = ____(3x 2 - _4x + 7) 2) 6 & 5 3) A) 3 3b) 5, 4

To multiply a monomial by a binomial, trinomial, etc., distribute the monomial 3(x + 2) = 3x + 6 3x(2x 2 – 5x +3) 6x 3 – 15x 2 + 9x To multiply two binomials, you will use the FOIL method – –Stands for FIRST, OUTSIDE, INSIDE LAST
3
FOIL Method (3x – 2)(2x + 7) Multiply first 2 terms 3x(2x) 6x 2 Multiply the outside terms 3x(7) 21x Multiply the inside terms -2(2x) -4x Multiply the Last terms -2(7) -14 Put them all together & simplify 6x 2 + 21x + -4x + -14 6x 2 + 17x + -14
4
(2x – 5)(4x 2 – 3x -1) Multiply the first term by each of the terms in the second factor 2x(4x 2 – 3x -1) 8x 3 – 6x 2 – 2x Multiply the 2 nd term by each of the terms in the second factor -5 (4x 2 – 3x -1) -20x 2 + 15x + 5 Add the results together & put in standard form 8x 3 + -20x 2 +-6x 2 +15x +-2x + 5 8x 3 + - 26x 2 + 13x + 5

10.3 multiplying polynomials – 2 special cases when multiplying binomials 1.Product of the sum & difference of 2 binomials. Special: because there will be no middle term, “b” (a + b)(a – b) = a 2 – b 2 (x + 3)(x – 3) = x 2 – 9
8
2. Square of a binomial Special: middle term is always double what the binomial tells you. (a + b) 2 = a 2 + 2ab + b 2 (2x + 5) 2 (2x) 2 + 2(2x)(5) + 5 2 4x 2 + 20x + 25

Try these 1.(5x +2)(5x-2) = 2.(2x – 7) 2 = 3.(3x + 2)(2x + 3) = Answers: 1.25x 2 – 4 2.4x 2 – 28x + 49 3.6x 2 + 13x + 6
