Wilson’s “Moral Diplomacy” and Mexico What was moral diplomacy, and how did it lead to Wilson’s actions in Nicaragua? Actions in Mexico? Diaz, Madero, Huerta, and attack on Veracruz? Why did Pancho Villa lead his raids, and why was it believable that Mexico would be so ANGRY with the U.S. policy toward their nation by 1916?

Europe Explodes into War How did WWI break out in Europe? How did the U.S. react to this war? Give examples. Explain the “freedom of the seas” and specific ways the United States was getting involved in the war despite proclaiming “neutrality.” What were the causes and effects of the Lusitania?

The U.S. Enters the War What were the issues and candidates in the Election of 1916? Who won and why? How did Wilson try to avoid war, and what ultimately caused him to buckle under the pressure? How did the U.S. MOBILIZE for war? Give specific examples, like the WIB, and Hoover and the Food Administration.

The War affects Americans How did the war affect: – Workers? – Women? – African-Americans? How did the U.S. finance the war? Explain the CPI, use of propaganda, and threats to civil liberties within the U.S. during the war years.

The actual fighting… Explain the role the doughboys played on the Western Front. Explain how the war ended, and Wilson’s philosophy of “peace without victory” as laid out in the Fourteen Points. Why was this overly idealistic—or why might Britain and France laugh Wilson out of the room? (See the chart on page 642 for hints)
