1 WHY DID THE WESTERN FRONT GET BOGGED DOWN IN TRENCH WARFARE SO QUICKLY?

2 When war broke out some military planners expected the war to be over by Christmas time after a few decisive battles!!  When the BEF arrived in France they advanced towards the German forces.  At Mons the BEF slowed the German advance but still had to retreat.

3 The Germans pushed on but soon the Schlieffen Plan began to unravel  Belgian resistance and the actions of the BEF caused the German advance to become disorganised.  At the River Marne the BEF and the French army stopped the German advance.  The Schlieffen Plan had failed!
