What Is a Concept Map?

The Basics A concept map is a way to graphically represent relationships between ideas, images, or words Helps to generate ideas and creativity Concepts are represented in boxes or circles Concepts are connected with linking phrases Different than a Mind Map

Basic Example

How to Concept Map Start with the major idea at the top of the page;
Shift down the page from more complex, to less complex ideas; Connecting phrases must link each idea; Cross links can be made between concepts, or across the page; Examples may be added.

The Process Brainstorm individually and in a group the main ideas of a concept; Write these ideas down on paper, or if available, post-it notes; Sort and classify the ideas, looking for relationships; Transfer the ideas onto a large sheet of paper; Draw lines and inserting linking words or phrases; Look for additional relationships between concepts.
