Climate Showcase Communities grant program established in 2009 to: Reduction of Emissions of Greenhouse Gases By Development of an Innovative Climate Projects Coordination Structure and Implementation of RECYCLING, RENEWABLE ENERGY and GREEN BUILDING PROGRAMS in the Gila River Indian Community

Overall Goal: To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 20,000 metric tons 3 Innovative climate project approaches Household Energy use reductions – Incandescent / CFL bulb exchange Renewable energy – 5 megawatt photovoltaic project Curbside Recycling program implementation Sustainability Strong program structure, coordination, and tribal capacity Planning, funding application, and ongoing greenhouse gas emissions reducing projects.

To decrease overall waste stream and save tipping fee costs for DPW Curbside Recycling Program 96-gallon recycling carts were delivered to 676 households May 2011 First pickup showed ~30% participation 2 tons (i.e., 4440 pounds of clean material collected Second pickup showed ~45% participation 2.5 tons of clean material
