6 Parts of a fraction There are two parts to a fraction: 5 6 The top one is called the numerator. The numerator is the number that represents the amount that is shaded. The bottom one is called the denominator. The denominator is the number that represents the amount of parts that the figure is divided into.

7 Types of fractions There are three types of fractions: 1) proper fraction –A–A proper fraction by definition is one where the numerator is smaller than the denominator. 3/4 2) improper fraction –A–An improper fraction by definition is one where the numerator is bigger than the denominator. 7/3 3) mixed number. –3–3) A mixed number by definition is one where there is a whole number and proper fraction. 2 1 / 2

8 Changing from improper fraction to mixed number Divide the denominator into the numerator. The quotient becomes the whole number, the remainder becomes the numerator and the denominator remains the same. 5/4

9 Changing from mixed number to improper fraction Multiply the denominator with the whole number and add the numerator. Then place your answer over the denominator. 6 ¼ = 4 x 6 + 1 = 25/4

10 Equivalent Fractions Two fractions are equivalent when they have the same value. In order to see if they have the same value divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same number. In the case below both the numerator and the denominator were divided by 4. 4/8 = 1/2
