Pythagorean Theorem Mindtool How does this relate to our lives? Eddie Roesing Project 2 EDTC 612

 For this mindtool activity, you will relate the Pythagorean Theorem to realistic experiences. This Pythagorean Theorem is used every day of our lives, which very few people tend to consider.  Your job is to create 5 examples of ways in which this theorem is used frequently. Create a scenario, a visual, and provide the values of two sides of your triangle.  We will take turns sharing these creations as a class, as well as answer your classmates’ problems, too.  Therefore, you must also provide the correct answer on the following slide. Show your work, so your classmates can see any mistakes that may have been made.  I have provided two examples for you to analyze and follow.  Now get started and show your creativity!!!

Example 1 Pythagorean Theorem and Baseball You've just picked up a ground ball at first base, and you see the other team's player running towards third base. How far do you have to throw the ball to get it from first base to third base, and throw the runner out? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/proof/puzzle/baseball.html

Example 1 - ANSWER Pythagorean Theorem and Baseball To throw from first to third, that line becomes our hypotenuse. Pythagorean Theorem  a 2 + b 2 = c 2 a = 90 & b = 90  square these two and add them 8100 + 8100 = 16,200 Now take the square root of c which is 16,200 You must throw the ball 127.3 ft = a b =

Example 2 Pythagorean Theorem and Helping Grandma You’re at your house and you need to go get milk for your grandma. How far do you have to walk (in total) to get to the store (using path B) AND bring it to your Grandma’s house (using path C)? Store Path B = 25 yards Path C = ? Path A = 32 yards Grandma’s Your House

Example 2 - ANSWER Pythagorean Theorem and Helping Grandma Store Path B = 25 yards Path C = ? Path A = 32 yards Grandma’s Your House

Now, add your slides and create your 5 realistic Pythagorean Theorem problems. You can be creative, add animations, change colors, show work using the writing tool, etc. I look forward to seeing all of your creative ideas!
