ON THE BACK OF YOUR AGENDA: TURN IN After watching the video, discuss how the writers of the show decided what language and which topics to pursue in order to achieve their desired reaction. What was their desired reaction for the audience?

BRIEF REVIEW OF VOCABULARY Audience- the “who” a writer is addressing Can be implied or stated directly Topic- a matter dealt with in a text, discourse, or conversation; a subject. Purpose or Task- the aim or goal; the object for which something is strived Opinion- a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

GUIDED PRACTICE: PARTIES ARE SIMPLY A WASTE OF TIME Read the essay along with the class Locate evidence of audience, topic, purpose, and opinion—fill in the chart accordingly

SMALL GROUP PRACTICE: ESSAY 2 Read Why Not Air Dry? in your group and work together to identify the audience, purpose, and topic within the essay. Fill in the chart. Highlight and annotate when necessary—be ready to share

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE-ESSAY 3 Read Three Cheers for Audio Books independently. Fill in the remaining blocks in your chart for this essay Answer the last block: Things that bug me—try to think of things from the essays or in your own lives that irritate you or that you have a strong opinion on. See if you can take that topic and make it appropriate for a 12 th grade audience

TOPIC SELECTION Use the handout given to you to begin proposing a topic for your senior persuasive research paper. Be sure that your topic meets all the necessary criteria and that the topic is appropriate for a 12 th grade audience. Fill out the handout—once you have finished the handout, bring your topic sheet up for approval.

CLOSURE: ZIP AROUND Identify Topic, audience, and purpose definitions What is the importance of each component to a piece of writing? What was something that “bugs” you that you may turn into a persuasive research paper?

EXIT TICKET AND STOP LIGHT On the back of your agenda draw a line separating your first answer at the beginning of class List your potential topics and list the audience and purpose for that topic Stop Light: Write your name on the sticky note given to you—place the sticky note on the color of the sign that most reflects your understanding of audience, topic, and purpose as it relates to writing.
