Resource Planning CTC-415
2
Resource Scheduling Need to have adequate –Labor –Materials –Equipment –To do project Network schedule must be developed around available resources
3
Resource Scheduling Lack of resource planning can decrease schedule effectiveness –Unrestrained schedules (no resource planning) cause $ and time problems –Float times get sacrificed due to lack of resources Floats lose their usefulness –Which resources do you schedule?
4
Example –Italics = Pile Driver –Only 1 pile driver
5
Resource Loading Allows planner to assign resources to an activity –Can be any type of resource that is critical
6
Resource Aggregation Total each resource used by day thru the schedule –Can also find cumulative resource used during project –Gives planners a good idea of what resources are needed and when
7
Resource Aggregation Early Start –Use all resources based on early start dates Late Start –Use all resources based on Late Start dates Develop a resource envelop –Shows resource usage based on ES & LS loadings Target Scheduling –Level resource load over schedule
8
Resource Availability Analysis Compare amount of resources available with maximum amount needed –Alerts planners to problems Shift activities to reduce resource needs Obtain more resources Extend completion date
9
Time and Resource Constrained Schedule can be either time or resource constrained – not both Time Constrained –Need resources to complete project on time Resource Constrained –Adjusts project duration to match resources
10
Resource Leveling Attempts to keep resource requirements level –Takes into account learning curve –Work force continuity –Avoids multiple mobil – demob costs –Under time constraints – shift non critical activities –Under resource constraints – extend project
11
Parallel Resource Allocation Method Another way to look at multiple resources at one time –Spreadsheet application –Allows you to keep all resources under control while developing schedule
12
Parallel Resource Allocation Method Steps –1) write down activities in Column 1 –2) Write down duration of each activity –3) Write down TF of each activity –4) Write down late Start of each activity –5) write down resources required –6) Find activities with lowest LS If tie use lowest TF
13
Parallel Resource Allocation Method Steps –7)Write resources in for each day –8) Extra Resources? Yes – Are there other activities that can be started? No – Go to next activity and start again
