1 Effectively Managing Sensory Needs in the General Education Setting Courtney and Allyson Stockton Developed in Conjunction With the Ventura County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)

2 In General Behaviors you may see Flapping Hands Rocking Twirling Jumping “Steming” Eating/sucking or other oral fixations Things that might help Yoga like stretching Coaching on how to control the feelings or acceptable replacements Velcro attached to clothes Chewable pencil toppers OT services

3 Overall Goals Ultimately want to teach replacement behaviors that are socially appropriate (rock in chair, use sensory toy) Keeps student in class Allows for more work completion Social benefits Need to work closely with Sped teacher and Occupational Therapist (OT) Use same systems at home

4 Classroom Techniques 1. Frequent breaks 2. Allow for constant movement 3. Allow more movement around classroom 4. Cool down area/“Private” hiding spot 5. Multi-modality instruction 6. Flexible assignments 7. Student choice in the order of assignment completion

5 Movement Breaks 1. Designate an area or certain play equipment 2. Determine a time limit 3. Allow running if appropriate 4. Must maintain supervision -Use a Para-professional, if possible

6 Materials to Consider 1. Sensory vest/weighted vest 2. Sensory toys 3. Elastic bands across desk legs 4. Velcro vest 5. Fabric swatches on arms and/or legs 6. Chewable pencil toppers 7. Pencil grips 8. Slant board 9. ‘Sit-n-Move’ seat cushion 10. Headphones -Sound blocking -Music/Stories 11. Colored overlays

7 Teach Tolerance 1. Start the discussion when the student is out of the room 2. Describe target student’s disability A. Strengths B. Areas of need C. Behaviors they may see 3. Use an example like wearing glasses -Fair does not mean equal 4. Determine specific behaviors classmates will engage in to show acceptance of the student A. Choosing student as a partner B. Showing student where to start working C. Explaining what the assignment is D. Helping get materials E. Walk with student to different areas in class and on campus 5. Teach classmates to encourage each other, nicely -Offer rewards?
