2 Definition Volume is the amount of space occupied by a 3-D object. The best way to visualize volume it to imagine filling an object with water. The amount of water required is the volume of the object. What are some common units for measuring volume?

3 Did you know that 1 cup is approximately 240 mL? Then 2 cups must be about 500 mL -- half a litre! It can be difficult to calculate the volume of 3-D objects in L or mL. If we know the dimensions of the object in SI units, we can calculate the volume and then convert to mL and L.

4 Units of Volume The units for volume are said to be “cubed”, “cubic” or to the power of 3. For example, ______ or _______. To calculate the volume of a rectangular prism (box) you can use the following formula: Volume Box = l x w x h Where l = lengthw = widthh = height

5 Ex1. Calculate the volume of the following rectangular prism: l = 8 cm w = 5 cm h = 3 cm How can we convert this to mL or L? It is actually quite easy! 1 “cubic cm” = 1 mL OR 1 cm 3 = 1 mL AND 1 m 3 = 1000 L So the volume of the rectangular prism is:
