Spring 2005, Gülcihan Özdemir Dağ Lecture 5, Page 2 5.0 Revisiting Printf: Adding the Minimum Field Width The C language allows you to add an integer between the percent sign (%) and the letter in a format specifier. The integer is called the minimum field width specifier because it specifies the minimum field width and ensures that the output reaches the minimum width. For example, in %10f, 10 is a minimum field width specifier that ensures that the output is at least 10 character spaces wide. The example below shows how to use the minimum field width specifier.

Spring 2005, Gülcihan Özdemir Dağ Lecture 5, Page 4 Analysis Without using any minimum field width specifiers, program prints out the two integers by calling the printf() function. You can see in the output section that the output made by the statements 12, which takes two character spaces, while the output, 12345, 11 takes five character spaces. Later on a minimum field width, 5, is specified by %5d. The output therefore takes five character spaces, with three blank spaces plus two character spaces of 12. (See the third output line in the output section.) The %05d in printf(), shown next, indicates that the minimum field width is 5, and zeros are used to pad the spaces. Therefore, you see the output made by the execution of the statement is 00012 The %2d in the minimum field width to 2, but you still see the full-size output of 12345. This means that when the minimum field width is shorter than the width of the output, the latter is taken, and the output is still printed in full.

Spring 2005, Gülcihan Özdemir Dağ Lecture 5, Page 5 5.0 Revisiting printf: Aligning Output As you might have noticed in the previous example, all output is right-justified. In other words, by default, all output is placed on the right edge of the field, as long as the field width is longer than the width of the output. You can change this and force output to be left- justified. To do so, you need to prefix the minimum field specifier with the minus sign (-). For example, %-12d specifies the minimum field width as 12, and justifies the output from the left edge of the field.

If x equals 2 and y equals 10 for ( j = x; j <= 4 * x * y; j += y / x ) is equivalent to for ( j = 2; j <= 80; j += 5 ) Notes about the for structure: –"Increment" may be negative (decrement) –If the loop continuation condition is initially false The body of the for structure is not performed Control proceeds with the next statement after the for structure –Control variable Often printed or used inside for body, but not necessary

Spring 2005, Gülcihan Özdemir Dağ Lecture 5, Page 29 5.12Structured-Programming Summary Structured programming –Easier than unstructured programs to understand, test, debug and, modify programs Rules for structured programming –Rules developed by programming community –Only single-entry/single-exit control structures are used –Rules: 1.Begin with the “simplest flowchart” 2.Any rectangle (action) can be replaced by two rectangles (actions) in sequence 3.Any rectangle (action) can be replaced by any control structure (sequence, if, if / else, switch, while, do / while or for ) 4.Rules 2 and 3 can be applied in any order and multiple times
