Ethics & Morality Ethics and Morality are synonymous…these terms define an area of human responsibility. “Good ethics involves at least two things: identifying intelligently and discernibly what is worthwhile or valuable, and finding ways to distribute that good fairly (Frankena 1973). The need for ethics arose from conflict…what is yours, mine or ours. It is the difference between how people do act and how people ought to act.

Ethics Teachers and coaches are considered responsible for nurturing and enhancing ethical behavior. Values serve as the foundation for an individual’s way of life.

What can we teach students and players…
Justice and Equality Fair and equal treatment Treat the low skilled and the average the same as the athletes Students and athletes should be treated equally regardless of race, socio-economic status or gender

Self-respect Self-respect and a positive self-image are essential for any chance of success Teachers and coaches must respect that students and athletes give their best and should be acknowledged for it. Teachers and coaches should follow the Golden Rule: Treat students and players the way they would like to be treated in return.

Respect and Consideration for Others Students and athletes need to learn how to respect fellow students and competitors by the example set by teachers and coaches. Officials should given respect even when they are considered to be wrong. Coaches must show respect to teach respect. Coaches and teachers set the tone for respect and consideration of others from example.

Respect for Rules and Authority Without rules and authority society could not function. Rules are designed as a guideline of conduct in sport. Accepting the concept of rules as “the letter of the law” or as “the spirit of the law” as compared to the purpose of the rule. What does coaching players or students to “bend the rules” to their advantage teach their students or players?

A Sense of Perspective or Relative Values How important is sport? What part does sport play in your life? What role does participation in sport and Physical Education play in our lives? How important is winning …all the time? What about academic integrity? Do we play athletes when they are not eligible…regardless of the reason just to win?

What are the questions that need to be asked to formulate the argument either pro or con for a specific situation or competition? Can coaches say one thing and do something else for the sake of public opinion? Is there an absolute when it comes to competition and winning?

Ethical issues in teaching…
Should teachers focus on students “who want to learn” and ignore the others? Should the “good equipment” be kept in the closet for the team to use at practice? Should equipment be purchased for the “after hours” programs that cater to “the performers” in the area?

Should teachers follow the prescribed state and national guidelines even if it means teaching activities that students don’t necessarily want to play? Can teachers only teach the activities they enjoy and are already capable of teaching and ignore the needs of the students and the curriculum?

Read all articles Pick out three points to defend an argument from either position: for or against banning Dodgeball… That should be a total of six points: three for banning Dodgeball and three against banning Dodgeball You will be put on one side or the other at random on Thursday to defend that position.
