11.  What makes this funny?  The “extra” is the singer’s arrest record and it is a long, long, long paper.  What makes this not- so-funny?  It’s a sad, but TRUE, account of many who have found fame and fortune. They have also found themselves in trouble with the law.  Who is the target of the satire?  Famous people/musicians

A NNOTATIONS  What does this word – ANNOTATE – mean?  To mark important information in the text  How do you know what is “important information”?  Is it an example of a literary device: theme, character development symbol, foreshadowing, etc?  BE AWARE: Not every metaphor, simile, personification, etc. is important and planning to mark all of them would be exhausting and pointless.  Instead, have a conversation with the text. Ask yourself, “What does this mean?” and “What is the purpose of telling me this information?”

What do EFFECTIVE ANNOTATIONS do?  Re-write, paraphrase, or summarize a particularly difficult passage or moment.  Make meaningful connections to your own life experiences.  Explain the historical context or traditions/social customs that are used in the passage.  Offer an analysis or interpretation of what is happening in the text.  Point out and discuss literary techniques that the author is using

21. Let’s Practice – Chapter 1 You don’t know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt Polly -- Tom's Aunt Polly, she is -- and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before.
