6 S OUND SIMPLE ENOUGH, RIGHT ? N OT SO FAST … T HERE ARE 7 DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHANGE A NOUN FROM SINGULAR TO PLURAL

7 R ULE #1 For most nouns, the plural is formed simply by adding an s. Examples: SingularPlural carcars dogdogs bookbooks

8 R ULE #2 For nouns that end in s, x, sh, or ch, the plural is formed by adding an es. Examples: SingularPlural busbuses taxtaxes dishdishes couchcouches

9 R ULE #3 For nouns that end in a consonant and a y, the plural is formed by changing the y to i adding an es. Examples: SingularPlural ladyladies fryfries flyflies

10 R ULE #4 For many nouns that end in f or fe, the plural is formed by changing to ves. Examples: SingularPlural wolfwolves calfcalves halfhalves
