Get out your hero list (the hero you are like and his/her qualities) Add any heroic qualities you see from “The Man in the Water.” Be sure to jot a few names beside the qualities so that when we write our essay, you have something to refresh your memory. Keep the list out to jot notes from the next text.

Archetypes What do Pretty Woman, Of Mice and Men, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars all have in common? Archetypes are repeating patterns in literature, across ALL cultures. Archetypes can be repeating character types, settings, symbols, themes, and plots. What common character type did we see in A Long Way Gone when we “listened” to the African folktale explaining how spiders got skinny abdomens and long legs? In small groups, fill in the archetype web with common archetypes.
