In 1749, by the time of Goethe’s birth, no official Germany existed. Frankfurt, Goethe’s birthplace, lay in the Holy Roman Empire. Goethe’s death in 1832 fell approximately 24 years after the dissolving the HRE and the publishing of Faust.
