2 Occurs when membranes covering the brain and spinal cord become infected. Can spread through fungi, bacteria, or protozoa. Can spread through kissing or sharing saliva. How is it caused?

3 Meningitis is widespread, but most cases are found in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia. (largest outbreak from 96'- 97' in Africa effecting over 250,000 ) Most cases occur in newborns. Target Population

4 The disease attacks the nervous system and cause loss of immunity to other diseases. Loss of mobility as well since it attacks both the brain and spinal cord region. How is effect the CNS/PNS

5 The beginning stages of meningitis are flu- like symptoms, so many mistake it for the flu. Headaches, fevers,neck stiffness, genital herpes etc.. are all symptoms as well. What are the symptoms?

6 Untreated, Meningitis is almost always fatal. Numbers in newborns up to 30% may die and fatalities are almost 40% in adults. Some young survivors may experience hearing loss, epilepsy, and may become mentally handicapped. Prognosis

7 There is no cure for Meningitis even though there are preventable vaccines for it. The best cure is rest. Cure

8 A notable case was Charlotte Bisman(New Zealand) who became the most famous case after still surviving after having her legs and arms amputated. Brad Pitt also had a mild case in 2005.

9 The National Meningitis Association is the largest National organization in the US which advocated studying the disease and prevention. NMA
