What Kind of Reader Are You ?

Emergent -Knows that the words in books tell a story. -Uses pictures to help understand the text. -Relies on memory to re-read familiar books. -Has a vocabulary below 200 words. -Can guess what will happen next.

Early -Knows about commas, periods, and paragraphs. -Can sound out harder or new words. -Takes risks (reads new books or aloud) -Self-corrects when mistakes are made. -Reads familiar books with confidence. -Make personal comments on text.

Transitional -Likes to choose which books they read. -Would rather read by themselves. -Finds a “purpose” for what they’re reading. -Looks for overall meaning of what’s being read. -Has an adequate vocabulary (1000+ words) -Reads longer pieces of writing with no illustrations. -Responses personally and critically.

Fluent - “Transitional Reader” level plus: -Excellent at sounding out words, deciding if what they’ve read is correct. -Extensive vocabulary (3500+ words). -Seeks ways to find meaning of what was read. -Responds critically, personally to a wide range of texts. -Likes to read in spare time, actively chooses a wide range of books.

Extended-Fluent -Have been at the “Fluent” stage for a while. -Redefine their skills as a reader. -Read books at an advance level, process very difficult texts easily. -Love to read in spare time, usually in areas of high interest. -Thoughtful, reflective and may challenge what they’ve read.
