2 Onomatopoeia It is the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it: Animal sounds such as quack, moo, meow, arf, buzz, hiss, oink, and roar; Others are hiccup, zoom, bang, beep, splash, crunch, pow, and sizzle.

3 Alliteration It is the repetition of the same sounds or of the same kinds of sounds at the beginning of words or in stressed syllables. Examples: Handsome Harry hired hundreds of hippos for Halloween. Pretty Polly picked pears for preserves. Karl Kessler kept the ketchup in the kitchen.

4 Hyperbole It is extravagant exaggeration used to emphasize a point. Examples: It was a mile high ice cream cone. These books weigh a ton. It took forever to get here. I could eat a horse.

5 Personification It is a description of an object as being a living person or animal. Examples: The dog yelled to me as it ran across the field. The house cried as it thought of being torn down. The window winked at me. The rain kissed my cheeks as it fell.

6 Simile It is when you compare two nouns (persons, places or things) that are unlike, with "like" or "as.“ Examples: He was as big as a mountain! That boy is as fast like a cheetah! Those twins are as alike as two peas in a pod. These cookies taste like garbage.

7 Metaphor A metaphor is a figure of speech that says that one thing is another different thing. Examples: He was a mountain of a man. John is a real pig when he eats. You are my sunshine. Her home was a prison.
