2 United States Between 1820 and 1872 there is a massive emigration to the United States of America. At that period 379 130 Portuguese emigrants entered that country During the first half of the 20th Century, emigration to the United States continued to grow. Nowadays 1 153 351 people form the Portuguese community residing there.

3 Where did they settle? The Portuguese communities settled in: Connecticut Rhode island New York New Jersey California

4 Canada Emigration started at the beginning of the fifties, with the signature of bilateral emigration agreements between Portugal and Canada. It reached its peak in the last years of 60 and 70. At the end of the eighties there is a noticeable break. The Portuguese who emigrate to Canada come from Azores. There is an estimated population of 506 270 Portuguese individuals in Canada, including the Luso- descendants.

6 Brazil In the 16th Century started a constant migratory movement towards Brazil. That movement intensified in the 18th Century. It has reached its highest dimension between 1901 and 1930. After the war, this movement decreased, since Portuguese emigration started to move towards Europe. Nowadays, the Portuguese community in Brazil is formed by 700 000 individuals.
