Chapter 8, Section 2 Notes Page 242 The Five “Good Emperors” After the death of Augustus in 14A.D.Rome had several good and several horrible emperors. In 96 A.D. Rome entered the age of the 5 “Good Emperors” – Hadrian – Expanded the empire through England and protected the rights of women, children and slaves – Marcus Aurelius was the last “good emperor” his son Commodus ruled with brutality and started the downfall of the Roman Empire

The Greek Influence on Rome pg. 243 Religion – The Romans, like the Greeks practiced polytheism – Many Roman gods had similarities with Greek gods Roman God ‘Jupiter’ and Greek God ‘Zeus’ – Romans adopted Greek heroes such as Hercules

Building on Greek Ideas Romans valued learning just as the Greeks did – Romans valued mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy. One famous mathematician was Pythagoras Pythagorean Theorem A 2 + B 2 = C 2.

Architecture and Technology “All roads lead to Rome” Roads – First road system built throughout empire – Allowed for quick movements of troops and goods – Many Roman roads were built so well they are still used today, mostly for foot traffic, no cars

Architecture and Technology Aqueducts – structure that carried water a long distance – Used arches to carry water long distances – 4 out of every 5 miles was underground – Provided clean drinking and bathing water

Roman Law Roman law was advanced for its time and was the basis of laws still used today – Right to face accuser – Burden of proof is on accuser – Freedom of thought – Had judges and juries
