A. Personal Appearance 1. Good Health – A. Diet: Eat well-balanced diet – B. Rest: Get adequate rest (8 hours/night) Helps you deal with stress better – C. Exercise: 3 times per week for at least 30 minutes (minimally) Maintains circulation, increased muscle tone, sleep better – D. Good posture: helps prevent fatigue – E. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, drugs These all decrease mental function

A. Personal Appearance cont … 2. Professional Appearance (different than personal appearance) – A. Uniform: Neat, wrinkle-free, clean, well-fitting – B. Clothing: Clean, neat, not too tight or baggy – C. Name Badge: In proper place on uniform States name, title, & department – D. Shoes: Good support, clean – E. Personal Hygiene: Shower, deodorant, brush teeth, etc. Medical term for bad breath = halitosis

A. Personal Appearance cont … – F: Nails: short, clean, clear polish (germs live here) – G: Hair: clean, neat, brushed, UP – H: Jewelry: None except wedding band, watch, & small stud earrings (No visible body piercings) – I: Make-up: Not excessive. Just enough to give you a natural appearance

B. Personal Characteristics 1. Empathy: Being able to identify with someone else ’ s feelings (not feeling sorry for them) 2. Honesty: Being truthful 3. Dependability: Reliable 4. Willingness to learn: Able to adapt to changes (medical field is always changing) 5. Patience: Tolerant and understanding

B. Personal Characteristics cont … 6. Acceptance of criticism: Critiques that will allow you to improve (so you can learn from this) 7. Enthusiasm: Enjoy your work and have a positive attitude 8. Self-motivation: Ability to know what needs to be done and do it without being told – You set goals for yourself and try to reach them

B. Personal Characteristics cont … 9. Tact: Ability to say and do things in a kind way. 10. Competence: You must be qualified and capable of doing a task. 11. Discretion: Use good judgment in what you say and do – In HC you have access to private personal information

B. Personal Characteristics cont … 12. Responsibility: Be accountable for your actions (you do what you are supposed to do whether someone is looking or not) 13. Team player: Work well with others.
