All rights reserved 2 Approved for Public Release What is Social Software? n Built around the following premises –Conversational interaction between individuals or groups –Social feedback – ratings, reputations –Social networks – create and manage a digital expression of people’s personal relationships, and to help them build new relationships n Social software tends to be “bottoms-up”, based on the desire of individuals to affiliate –Opposite approach of former groupware and traditional collaborative tool approaches –Groups are self-forming and self-organized - “a sprawling, tentacled world” n The essential elements of social software will be incorporated into conventional software, changing the way collaboration and communication is managed (stoweboyd.com, Jan ’05)
