The Elements of Fiction English 9
2
Setting WHERE a story takes place – “Place” WHEN a story takes place – “Time” ** What is essential? **
3
Characters Stated Characteristics – things you are told directly by the author. (Johnny is smart.) Implied Characteristics – things you have to figure out from what is said. (Gina burst into the room, slammed the door and threw her books on the floor.)
4
Conflict The main problem that is at the core of the story. We don’t have a story without conflict. Internal Conflict is within 1 character (fear, substance abuse) External Conflict is between 2 or more characters (father vs. son)
5
Plot The sequence of events What actually happens in the story
6
Climax The high point Where the conflict changes
7
Resolution When the conflict is solved
8
Conclusion When the story ends without a resolution
9
Theme The main issues that the story deals with. – Not all stories have themes – for example a murder mystery might just be written for entertainment – Some classics have more than one theme.
